3 Strontium90 in BC Milk Part3

Three things we can do

1.    Maintain the level of calcium in your body.

We need to take this seriously, because as previously pointed out, there is NO safe level of radioactivity. We need to take our own initiatives and eliminate radioactive foods from our diet. At the same time, it is important to do this in a way that will not compromise our level of nutrition.

It’s extremely important to keep your bones full of calcium because if you are deficient in calcium, any radioactive Strontium in your body will fill up the place where the calcium would have gone.

Finding a non-radioactive source of calcium may be a little more difficult. After Fukushima we started eating three and five year aged cheese in an attempt to eat “pre-Fukushima” dairy. But now that we have learned that there is low level of Strontium 90 in our milk (and thus cheese) still left over from the weapons testing, that does not seem like a good option anymore.

We do not really care if the radioactivity comes from Fukushima or from weapons testing or from uranium mining or from the fallout from Chernobyl, we just want to eat a clean and radioactive-free diet.

For the purpose of this article, we will concentrate on keeping our calcium intake at a level that meets our nutritional needs.

Below is a list of foods that contain calcium. Highlighted in red are the foods that testing has shown may contain radioactive elements.

Foods that are high in Calcium:

So what are we left with as good clean, non-radioactive sources of calcium? Certainly nothing from the dairy group and nothing from the oceans.  It leaves us with highly nutritious vegetarian sources:

Tofu, white beans, navy beans, chickpeas, turtle beans, pinto beans, sesame seeds, oats, turnip greens, cabbage greens, bok choy, okra, kale, gai lan, Chinese broccoli, blackstrap molasses, daylily flower and tempeh.

Soy milk is a good alternative to milk– just be sure it does not have any carrageenan in it as that additive is made from seaweed.

Peter Daley from The Food Lab in Australia has let us know that the goat’s digestive system bio accumulates radioactive contamination more than cow’s milk. So avoid drinking goat’s milk because it will be even higher in radioactivity than cow’s milk.

So, for example, if you are an adult between 19 and 50 years of age, you will need 1000 mg of calcium everyday.

Print out the list of the food rich in calcium and choose the foods in Black – (NOT red).  Add up each day how much calcium you are getting.  If you are not getting enough, you can add a supplement to get you up to 1000 mg.

A good supplement is SISU brand calcium citrate.  It has 300 mg calcium citrate with 150 mg magnesium (ratio of 2:1 for ca:mg).

If you make a good effort to get most of the calcium from the leafy greens, soy, and legumes, you will not only be getting safe sources of calcium but you will also, most likely, be improving your overall level of nutrition, as these are healthy low fat foods with lots of vitamins, protein and fiber.

2.    Monitor your food supply

It’s extremely expensive to send food samples into the lab.  The best scenario is that the government will set up regular food testing on an ongoing basis.

Email your government and encourage them to test the milk for radioactivity – ideally weekly. Only regular testing will tell you what is in your local milk supply. As the crisis at Fukushima is not over, we are continuing to receive fallout.  With weekly testing, we can determine if the level of contamination is growing.

If, unfortunately there is another meltdown somewhere, then you will have the present baseline to compare the weekly test results to after the next event occurs.

3.    Work to close down the nuclear power plant closest to where you live.

Every member of the public needs to get active and do everything possible to make sure there are no more Fukushima’s.  Find out where your closest nuclear reactor is located.  Then find out if there is a group working to shut it down.  If there is, JOIN IT!  If there isn’t, CREATE ONE!

We in Vancouver, B.C. are 260 miles away from a nuclear power plant in Washington state. The nuclear industry gave it an innocuous sounding name - the Columbia Generating Station (CGS).  This nuclear power plant is a Mark II Boiling Water Reactor – the same type of aging, design-flawed nuclear reactor that failed three times at Fukushima.

We are working with the Physicians for Social Responsibility in Washington state to get this nuclear power plant shut down. “Our” nuclear power plant is on an earthquake fault and not designed to withstand the earthquake they now know it could get.  It is downstream from the Grand Coulee dam that could fail in an earthquake. The resultant flooding could severely damage the nuclear power plant’s equipment and cause a meltdown.

Every week we read the latest news on the contamination of Japan. We have watched the evacuation of the Japanese. They will never go home again.  We have seen the high levels of contamination in the food supply. We are watching as more and more information is revealed about how the Japanese people are getting sick from the radiation. Our hearts ache for them and we do not want this to happen to us.

Even without a meltdown, Government regulations allow nuclear plants to "routinely" and "deliberately" emit massive amounts of radioactive gases and other radioactive elements into the environment every year. This is just the normal operation of a nuclear plant and does not consider the numerous undetected leaks, mishaps, lies, and near misses that are chronic problems in the nuclear industry.

If you want to make a powerful difference to the planet for the rest of time, we urge you to spend every free minute you have in efforts to get your local nuclear power plant shut down. We cannot afford to have another meltdown anywhere on this planet.
